Performance Based Selection

Genetics from UK and Canada

Careful selection of traits

Our breeding program is about bringing out the best Ancestrial traits in our Cheviots

The Breeding program

Generations top quality Genetic selection

Here at Isle of Skye Cheviots, we believe in having a powerful maternal ewe flock. Our attention has always been focused on conformation, structure and production in our sheep flock. We like our females to be moderate, easy keeping, excellent uddered females with the capacity and natural muscling to do well on pasture.

Our internal  performance and production records aid us in selecting our replacements  strict culling process of our flock with structural and maternal superiority. These are our number one objective for flock development.

Our breeding program includes retaining our own replacement ewes from our flock, this enables us to adhere to our strict set of guidelines and keep uniformity within our flock.

Our Canadian North Country Cheviots are bred for our Canadian climate.  They  are bred to be hardy, adaptable, and low maintenance.  Isle of Skye cheviots  are bred to produce superior lamb crops and meaty carcasses.  They are efficiently bred for utility and production in a variety of management systems.

“Performance” is a very important part of the sheep industry.  Our aim is to to raise North Country Cheviots with as much performance and muscle mass as possible, however we will not sacrifice structural soundness, fertility nor maternal traits to get it. We believe that North Country Cheviots are a maternal breed that naturally excel at producing the most desirable lamb in the industry.

Isle of

“Producing lambs that are born easy, have the will to live, the ability to grow, and the quality to sell.”

Genetic selection has been our main focus. Creating a flock with ancestral influence and introducing our Canadian lines has been key for maintaining a standard within our flock. Clean, and closed-- we are a trusted go to in the sheep industry.

Preservation of home raised.

Our North Country Cheviots  are raised with the basics in mind.  We have a primary focus on the needs of the commercial sheep industry.  The basics are what has made Isle of Skye Cheviots the go to for  North Country Cheviots in the Canadian sheep industry for years.  We feel our commitment to the Canadian sheep industry, should be to help you, the sheep producer, produce predictable and profitable sheep using Isle of Skye Cheviot genetics. We feel that having kept the basics of the Canadian North Country Cheviot the forefront in our program is what has built both our flock and reputation. We won’t compromise our principals to chase trends  for short term gain.   We believe the most economically important traits for the sheep producer is still all about the fundamentals, which are fertility, longevity, structure, soundness, and fleshing ability.

We have brought in the best of the traditional UK genetics and combined them with our traditional genetics from the Queen mother’s Longoe flock. Now we are crossing our very best ewe lambs from those UK bloodlines back into the very best Canadian lines in the industry

There are many times in the sheep  industry where feed reserves are marginal. More than ever, we recognize the importance of knowing there is a positive return for every dollar spent. At Isle of Skye Cheviots, we make every effort to ensure that there is value in every animal sold.

Through our ram development program  our rams develop at a rate of growth that ensures the most longevity as possible.  We also have an emphasis on sensible, consistent birth weights to ensure live lambs, with minimal labour.

Isle of Skye Cheviots  isn’t in this for the short haul. We have been in the livestock business for over 100 years. We feel that our genetic program has improved  over the last few years.  Breeding back to the  Canadian genetic pool has made our flock more consistent than ever. We believe good sheep can sell themselves and we try to offer a good selection of rams  that are affordable to the needs and budget of every shepherd.  We run the sheep flock like a commercial outfit, testing the  hardiness, fertility, udder quality and longevity under real world conditions.  Because we have been consistent in our breeding program we know our sheep can wean a respectable lamb crop under almost any conditions. We strive for low input management, and our sheep flock has been geared toward that.

We invite you to have a look at our Canadian North Country Cheviot flock, and you will see the difference between our flock and other flocks of North Country Cheviots.
